One of the most admirable jobs I know of is a school nurse. I am lucky to get to work with an amazing one every day at our school. I cannot imagine a job as challenging as hers! The list of “elementary school ailments” that she deals with on a daily basis makes her vital to our school community! She is the one responsible for taking care of all of the aches and pains of students, (and sometimes teachers,) each and every day! Tummy aches, cuts and scrapes, throw up, wet pants, giving out daily medications, the dreaded head lice and so much more!
She hands out tooth boxes to bring home to the tooth fairy when a child loses a tooth during the school day. She gives them a place to lie down and take a break if a child needs it. She is always calm and never seems to get flustered! She manages the cramps, twinges and pains of over 600 children – and she knows each of them by name, even our 110 new Kindergarteners! There is always something she has to deal with with our group of little ones. It could be something as small as a hangnail, to as big as a broken bone, but she’s there for all of them. Sometimes all it takes is an icepack or a sip of water, but when it comes from our beloved Ms. Thompson, it always makes the affliction better. We all joke that we “owe her big” for all of the little things that we send our kids to her for. Sometimes, all they need are some reassuring words from her to make them feel better.
She has dealt with a lot over the last few weeks with our kiddos, and on a daily basis she goes over and beyond her call of duty. I hope she knows just how much she is loved and respected at our school. She’s an amazing lady!
